Thursday: Wandering Through the News

10 July 2008

Think beer is food, and good beer is gourmet?  George Will has some interesting references to bolster your case.  As it turns out, beer has exerted a healthy Darwinian influence on us urban types.  Who knew?

Why, pray tell, is Jesse Jackson Sr. considered relevant?  The term “race hustler” must have been coined with him in mind.  Somebody needs to remind the “Reverend,” and those who call him such, that “the good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart” (Luke 6:45).

Which reminds me:  the endless cycle of unfortunate speech-demand for apology-“sincere” apology represents, more than any other political phenomenon, the degree to which American politics has devolved into playground antics and infantile whining.  If “Reverend” Jackson thinks Senator Obama needs to be relieved of certain body parts by force, let him say so whether the mike is on or off, and let him then tell us why.  In the meantime, let’s give this kind of thing less air time, not more.

The AP has a short feature on women inmates as wildland firefighters.  That’s nothing new, of course – at least the female aspect.  Ocie and Amie were a couple of Navajo women on our Heber Hotshots crew – now the Black Mesa Hotshots – back in the mid-80s, and it was ordinary back then.  So why does the AP writer think it’s so surprising now?

More rain coming to the Texas Panhandle today and this weekend.  Not many folks complaining, but it may be too little, too late for Lake Meredith.
