Cruelty

18 February 2008

It amazes me that some sectors of the animal-products industry do not go to great lengths to police their own bad actors.  Beyond the recall of 143,000,000 lbs of beef destined for school-lunch programs, it turns out that the meatpacker in question also had a number of employees whose seared consciences thought nothing of abusing the animals coming in for slaughter – prodding them with forklifts, kicking and shocking them, forcing water down their throats to drown them, and other means of mistreating animals that were already too sick or infirm to move themselves.  This kind of cruelty indicates a deep sickness of the soul.
