Reclaiming the Pledge

3 January 2008

A random thought occurred to me on p. 219 of Everything Must Change.

The superficial church/state argument that shrill, unlikable folks use to justify rejecting the Pledge of Allegiance is lamentable. Really, now: what kind of true liberal could object to “liberty and justice for all?”

But perhaps if the church (“under God,” or those who recognize the reality of the kingdom of God) were to embody God’s justice more fully rather than various forms of “benevolent” colonialism, the Pledge might not be an object of fear and reproach.

It’s not that the aim is bad; we just don’t live up to it.

Randomly,
