Brueggemann on Public [generic] Prayer

4 August 2007

William Willimon tells a funny story about a time that he was at a community meeting of some sort and was seated next to the great scholar Walter Brueggemann. In the interest of pluralist sensitivity, presumably, the clergyman officiating at the meeting offered the following prayer: “Great One, source of all being, immerse us in the human condition. Amen.” Willimon recalls that Brueggemann immediately muttered, “Lord, this is Walt. I don’t want any more immersion in the human condition than I’ve already got.”

Now why didn’t I think of that?
